 Ohio ANREP Meeting

3/9/05

1:30 – 3:00

Ag. Engineering Bldg.

Columbus, OH

Members Present:  J.P. Lieser, Jerry Iles, Robert McCall, Dana Oleskiewicz, Joe Bonnell, Kathy Smith, Chris Zoller and by phone Dave Apsley and Teresa Stone.

Secretary Report - Kathy:  Approval of December 9th minutes – Dana moved, Robert seconded – minutes approved.

Treasurers Report - Dave: Dave emailed Bill Hubbard about state dues.  20% of our ANREP dues come back to the state which equals $5 per member.  Since we aren’t at that point yet we don’t have any funds to report at this time.

Teresa asked if ANREP dues can be paid when OEAA dues are paid?  This will be checked into.

Chris brought up Scott Reed’s email about getting comments on some topics to him for the ECOP task force.  Teresa asked if rather than each responding we respond as a committee.  Therefore, the following comments were drafted with the intent of getting the memberships input.

1)       list 1 or 2 Internal Challenges –

One challenge is to hire enough people with the natural resource background to meet the needs.  This is also impact by hiring practices.

Funding will definitely be an internal challenge

2)      1 or 2 External Challenges –

Building a long term interest  - for watershed groups

Getting external groups to be better collaborators

Will clientele be willing to continue to work with us in the cost recovery phase.  Collecting fees may be an issue.

The changing landscape causes an external challenge – increased urbanization

Getting family and youth to become involved.  New technology doesn’t necessarily lend itself to some topics.

3)      Challenges that will be posed at CSREES –

Funding at all levels being cut

Applying and implementing grants takes time away from doing other things

There seem to be fewer RFP’s out there

Hard to get grants for some areas of natural resource work

Some folks more interested in agro-tainment than education

How to do cost recovery in a ‘public good’ environment.

Unfinished Business

Bylaws – JP presented the current draft of the bylaws and much discussion was had on changes that needed to be made.  One suggestion that was made for a change is that if the organization is dissolved the remaining funds would go into the School of Natural Resources scholarship fund.

Another suggestion was to make officer terms longer than 2 years and stagger their elections so that you wouldn’t be starting with a completely new slate of officers at some point.

JP will take the comments and make changes and email them to members for ratification.

Dave asked if we want to collect money locally – funds in addition to the $5 we get from national.  This was decided to be tabled until the annual meeting.

New Business

President’s Association – all the professional organizations meet with Keith Smith on a quarterly basis.  ANREP has been invited to participate.  April 26th is their next meeting date.

National Ratification – an email will be sent to national once the bylaws are ready for them to ratify.

Membership Drive – Chris has talked to some agents.  Maybe we need to target some specific ANR, CD and 4-H folks to get them interested in participating.

We may need to do some things to entice folks to join.  Brochures, strategic phone calls, perhaps sponsor something with NACAA meeting in Cincinnati in 2006

Web Page – we do have a web address.  Some topics that need to be put on there are the members list, officers, bylaws, the mission with links to the national website and other sites such as SNR and Extension.

Annual Awards – table this discussion for future discussion

Master Naturalist – things are moving forward, though there is some struggle with the name amongst a few of the groups.

Next meeting – June 20th 1:30 – 3:00

Will invite the representative for Healthy Water, Healthy People program
